Men: You Can Help Fight
Prostate Cancer – Enroll Now
Prostate
cancer knows no boundaries. Men of all ages, races and ethnic groups can
get prostate cancer. It is the most common type of cancer, after skin
cancer, among men in the United States. That is why Our Lady of Bellefonte
Hospital’s cancer care specialists are taking proactive measures
in the fight against prostate cancer. Through a clinical trial designed
to assess the effectiveness of dietary supplements in preventing the disease,
OLBH physician specialists are leading the way in clinical research.
In fact, Our Lady of Bellefonte is the only local hospital participating
in this nationwide study. The study is sponsored by the National Cancer
Institute and is called the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial,
or SELECT.
“SELECT is the first study designed to look directly at the effects
of vitamin E and selenium, both separately and together,” Barbara
Payne, RN, OLBH clinical research professional, said. "When the SELECT
study is complete, we will have the clinical research to know if these
dietary supplements are effective tools in the prevention of prostate
cancer."
Participants are still being sought for the local SELECT study. Kirti
Jain, M.D., OLBH oncologist, will conduct a community education session
for interested participants and their families in the hospital board room
on Tuesday, September 23, from 6-7:30 p.m. Men are eligible to participate
in SELECT if they are age 55 or older - age 50 or older for African-American
men; have never had prostate cancer and have not had any other cancer,
except skin cancer, in the last five years; and are generally in good
health. For more information or to register for the community education
session, please call the hospital's CareLine at (606)
833-CARE (2273).
