Pulmonary Services
For most people,
breathing is second nature. But for those who suffer from breathing problems
caused by injury or illnesses such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis,
each breath can be a major accomplishment.
A special group of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and support
staff provide care during diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of pulmonary
problems. The pulmonary care team works hand-in-hand with primary care physicians
to develop a plan of care which best meets your needs.
Respiratory Care
Those who face respiratory problems require expert programs and services
that will help them get stronger--physically and emotionally. The Respiratory
Care Department balances individualized, compassionate care with technology
to make a difference in the lives of our patients.
Through motivation, patients are able to better cope with their disease.
The healthcare professionals of the department motivate and provide patients
with the resources and techniques that enable better, more comfortable living.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program helps people with severe
breathing problems overcome the physical limitations resulting from their
disease. Candidates for the program include patients recovering from an
acute episode, people with lung disorders who need conditioning in preparation
for surgery, and anyone whose activities are limited by chronic lung disease.
Pulmonary rehabilitation is available at the hospital-based fitness and
rehabilitation facility, the Vitality Center.
Patients with irreversible conditions such as emphysema are taught to live
comfortably and productively through pulmonary rehabilitation. Diet, exercise,
medication and self-care training help the patient conserve strength, reduce
stress and cope more effectively with disease. The education helps patients
recognize problems and seek treatment before they become severe enough to
require hospitalization. Family members may be taught to care for their
loved ones when their condition becomes stable enough to return home.
